This spring, Seinäjoki is set to see significant news in the retail sector as Kärkkäinen’s newest department store opens its doors at the Ideapark shopping center on Thursday, April 23. The opening will bring something many locals have long been waiting for to the heart of South Ostrobothnia: an extensive product range and famously affordable prices.
The new store will span approximately 15,000 square meters, making it the largest individual retail unit within Ideapark upon completion. It will also be the first Kärkkäinen department store built according to the company’s renewed store concept.
“Seinäjoki is a natural place for us to expand. We explored other potential locations across Finland, but the research we commissioned confirmed our view that the Seinäjoki market area is in need of our strengths – affordable prices and an unmatched selection,” says Kärkkäinen CEO Pasi Lämpsä.

The impact of the new department store will also be seen in employment. Kärkkäinen estimates that the store will create around 200 new jobs, providing a significant boost to the local labor market during challenging times.
Recruitment began already last year, and the new store will offer a wide range of job opportunities in areas such as sales, logistics, and customer service.
Everything you could need for everyday life and leisure
Kärkkäinen stores are especially known for their exceptionally wide selection, with a promise of over 400,000 products. In the new store, customers will find almost everything they can imagine needing for everyday life and leisure—from home goods and tools to clothing, pet supplies, sports equipment, and hobby items.
The selection is complemented by services from Kärkkäinen’s machinery sales and maintenance operations, which have received recognition at other store locations. The company’s own café concept, Fresh!Coffee, will also be available for customers in South Ostrobothnia to try at the new store.
Kärkkäinen’s growth continues strong
Originating from Ylivieska, Kärkkäinen has grown over the years into a significant retail and e-commerce operator. In addition to Seinäjoki, the chain currently operates stores in Ylivieska, Lahti, Oulu, Ii, and Jyväskylä.
When the doors open on Thursday, April 23, it will mark a positive day not only for price-conscious residents of Seinäjoki, but also for the wider region—especially due to the new jobs created in the area.
