Don't fool yourself - the fish will always see your rig when your fly line is in the water. All the talk about completely invisible materials is more or less just advertising talk. However, the fact is that the better your lure hides in its surroundings, the better it will work and the more fish you will catch on your line.
There are two main factors intrinsic to the lure that determine how well you succeed in fooling the fish. The first is almost self-explanatory – the thinner your wig is, the better it is. This is not only related to the fact that it is more difficult for the fish to detect a thinner jig, but also to the fact that a thinner jig allows the fly to move more naturally (actively or passively) in the water. Unfortunately, there are several serious problems with using a thin wig: it is very sensitive to any kind of wear and tear, one wind knot can be fatal, straightening the wig can be very challenging especially in windy conditions, and so on.
The above problems lead us to the second point - the better your fake material blends into its watery environment, the better the results. In principle, this is also self-explanatory, but because it involves as an essential factor the movement of light in different materials, which is expressed by the refractive index (n). The refractive index basically describes a substance's ability to refract light. In simplified terms, this means from the angler's point of view that if we want to fade our lure into the water, the refractive indices of it and the surrounding water should be as close as possible. And this is exactly the point where fluorocarbon enters the picture – its refractive index is much closer to normal water than that of nylons used as a foam material. This is a fact that everyone can test at home without fancy laboratory equipment: take a glass or a jug of water and immerse a piece of your favorite nylon wig in it, and then insert a part of our new SpaceFluoro wig into the same water. SpaceFluoro is not an invisible miracle material either, but it does get close to evil.
The SpaceFluoro product family includes a large number of lines of different thicknesses, among which competition fishermen, anglers with small fish imitations, pike fanatics and warm water divers will find the thicknesses they need. Not only is this new fake material almost invisible, it also has a whole host of other very useful properties, some of which are listed below:
• dense uniform material cuts well against surface tension and sinks well
• medium-stiff fluorocarbon with very good knot resistance and tensile strength
• easy-to-tie material with little line memory
• thanks to the flat surface, it is very resistant to wear
• tolerates UV light and chemicals better than nylon wigs
• the peruke straightens well even in windy conditions
SpaceFluoro may not be the cheapest material on the market (and it sinks quite quickly, so it's definitely not the best material for normal surface fly fishing), but when it comes to any subsurface fishing, whether it's fooling small mountain trout with mini size nymphs, hooking big tundra trout with big minnows or twisting with saltwater torpedoes, we dare to say that you will find a suitable model for you in the SpaceFluoro product family.
