A car in the 70s tells about the lush decade of horsepower monsters, pollution standards, safety bumpers and fuel savings in words and pictures, from a Finnish perspective. While the book follows the reactions of the old car industry to the arrival of new competitors and drastic changes in conditions, it relates those phenomena to Finnish everyday life. The 1970s was also a time of changes in the history of cars and transport in Finland and elsewhere in the world. We moved from free speeds through the 80 km/h general limit to permanent road-specific speed limits. Traffic deaths were at their peak in the early 70s, around 1,200 road users died in our country each year. Laws such as mandatory seat belts were enacted, which were fiercely opposed, but which today are taken for granted.
