A dying woman in a Venetian hospital addresses her last words to Inspector Guido Brunetti, who promises to investigate the tragedy that befell the woman's family. A clue received on his deathbed leads Brunetti to the center of a complex tangle. It soon becomes clear that all of Venice may be in danger.
