Sharpening your Bushcraft Knife
Your Bushcraft knife is a top quality, well-made tool designed to withstand the rigors of outdoor adventures. Maintaining the sharpness of the blade ensures its optimum performance. Here's a step-by-step guide to help keep your knife super sharp.
General sharpening instructions
Sharpening Inspection
Visual Inspection: Look for visible defects such as nicks or rust.
Touch: Gently slide your thumb over the blade (crosswise, not lengthwise) to identify any dull areas.
Selection of sharpening tools
Sharpening stone: Suitable for both coarse and fine sharpening.
Sharpening stick: Useful for fine adjustment of the blade after sharpening.
Step-by-step guide: sharpening a blade
Step 1: Preparation
Cleaning the blade: Make sure the blade is clean and dry before sharpening.
Preparing the stone: If using a water-based stone, wet it before sharpening.
Step 2: Determine blade angle
Right angle: The angle of the blade is key when sharpening; generally 20° is a good starting point for bushcraft knives.
Sharpening: Hold the knife against the stone, maintaining the correct sharpening angle throughout the process.
Step 3: Sharpening
Move the blade across the stone smoothly and controllably, covering the entire length of the blade.
Consistency: make sure the entire blade of the knife is sharpened evenly.
Step 4: Finishing
Fine stone: move on to a finer stone, if you have one.
Finish: Repeat the sharpening process, focusing on achieving a smooth, very sharp finish.
Step 5: Cleaning and Confirmation
Cleaning: Thoroughly wipe the blade to remove any debris.
Confirmation: Test the sharpness of the blade with care and safety.
Safety First
Always wear protective gloves when sharpening the knife.
Confirm that the sharpening surface is stable.
Maintenance
Always keep the blade dry and oil it occasionally to prevent rusting.
Wear a sheath to protect the knife when not in use.
By following these guidelines, your batch knife will serve you for many decades and maintain its sharpness for a long time.
