Adequate intake of vitamin D should be taken care of throughout life. Vitamin D is formed by the action of sunlight on the skin. Dietary vitamin D can be obtained from fatty fish, fish oil, eggs, mushrooms and vitamin-enriched foods, e.g. milk and margarine. Finns' intake of vitamin D has been found to be too low. The recommended intake of vitamin D is 7.5 micrograms/day for people aged 2-60 and 20 micrograms/day for people over 60 years old. For pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, a vitamin D preparation of 10 micrograms/day is recommended all year round.
Since the food sources of vitamin D are quite small, vitamin D supplements are recommended all year round, especially for children, young people, the elderly and pregnant women. Almost everyone is recommended vitamin D as a dietary supplement, especially during the dark season (October-March).
Vitamin D deficiency can be caused by insufficient sunlight, inadequate diet and metabolic disorders.
