Ubiquinol is the active form of ubiquinone and thus both substances are the same coenzyme Q10 in different forms. Ubiquinol is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like substance. In our body, coenzyme Q10 occurs more than 90% as ubiquinol. From a dietary supplement, ubiquinol is easily absorbed and is immediately used by the cells without the need for enzymes to convert it into an active form. As a dietary supplement, 50 mg of ubiquinol is equivalent to 100 mg of ubiquinone.
The elderly should especially use ubiquinol, as the body's ability to produce ubiquinone and convert it into the reduced active form ubiquinol decreases with age. Ubiquinol also benefits tired, convalescing people and others who are unable to utilize ubiquinone due to e.g. weakened absorption or enzyme activity. Ubiquinol is also recommended for athletes and smokers. The effect can be noticed as an increase in the level of alertness
