Magnesium affects the balance of electrolytes and promotes normal energy-producing metabolism. It helps reduce fatigue and exhaustion. Magnesium is important for muscles, e.g. for the normal functioning of the heart muscle and nerves. It also participates in the maintenance of bones and teeth, cell division and protein production. Magnesium participates in at least 300 metabolic events in the body, so it is a very important mineral for the body's functioning.
The more you move and drink fluids, the more you need magnesium, because it is removed from the body with urine and sweat. The general intake recommendation for magnesium is 310-420 milligrams (mg) per day. Finns get the most magnesium from cereal products, vegetables (potatoes, fruits, berries), drinks (coffee and mineral water) and milk products. If the daily diet does not contain the required amount of magnesium, it is worth supplementing the intake with a magnesium food supplement. A healthy person does not accumulate too much magnesium from food or from magnesium supplements taken orally.
Citrate magnesium is absorbed quickly, as the acidity of the stomach contents does not affect its absorption. It is a suitable choice when you want to replenish your magnesium reserves quickly.
