Rusks & Sweet Bagels

Rusks and pretzels belong on the Finnish coffee table

Rusks and pretzels have been enjoyed by Finns for a long time. Cinnamon rusks or sugar rusks are familiar treats for many from childhood—served at home or at grandma’s coffee table. Typically, a rusk is dipped in milk or coffee before eating. Pretzels are versatile treats that you can enjoy as they are or customise to your liking. They fit perfectly on a coffee table, with evening tea, or as a tasty snack for a nature outing.

Rusks and pretzels are traditional favourites

Crispy, tasty rusks are made from pure ingredients. A rusk is a slice of sweet bun or bread—or a split roll—that is dried until crisp in a low oven after baking. The flour can be wheat, graham, oat or rye. Cinnamon and sugar rusks are baked from sweet bun dough and flavoured with cinnamon and sugar.

Rye rusks typically contain only rye flour and salt, and they are leavened with a small amount of baker’s yeast. Crushed rusks can be turned into breadcrumbs, which can be used, for example, in baking to prevent sticking to a baking surface, or as an extender in traditional meatball mixture. At Christmas, breadcrumbs are commonly used to crust the Christmas ham during the final stage of roasting.

A pretzel is a ring- or loop-shaped wheat pastry. A well-known Finnish traditional pastry is the Viipuri pretzel (Viipurinrinkeli). Pretzels arrived in the Finnish city of Viipuri as early as the 1300s with Franciscan monks. Pretzel-baking skills later spread from Viipuri to Lappee and other parts of eastern Finland. The cardamom-flavoured Viipuri pretzel has remained a traditional market product for well over a hundred years. Even today, pretzels are baked using the original recipe.

A coffee-table classic or a companion for evening tea

In Kärkkäinen’s online store you’ll find a versatile selection of rusks and pretzels in different sizes and flavours from both Finnish and international producers. Rusks are a great and wholesome choice for breakfast, snacks or coffee breaks. A handy home cook can also use rusks in many different savoury and dessert recipes.

Traditional Finnish sugar rusks or cinnamon rusks are made carefully and without rushing. That’s how a unique coffee-table classic is created. The most popular sugar rusk on the market, made from a roll, is partially baked with butter and naturally flavoured with sugar and cardamom. A larger bag is enough to treat a bigger group too. High-fibre oat rusks or wholegrain rusks are a healthier option, for example with evening tea.

You’ll also find tasty pretzels in Kärkkäinen’s online store, which can be enjoyed as they are or customised with different fillings. A vanilla-flavoured pretzel is sure to be a hit at the coffee table, and a tea moment is perfectly finished with a classic pretzel topped with your favourite fillings. Order delicious rusks and pretzels conveniently from the online store!
