Messerschmitt Me262A-1a/U4: The iconic fighter with the ‘long arm’
The Messerschmitt Me262 made history as the world’s first operational jet fighter. But this special variant takes the legend a step further. With the Me262A-1a/U4 kit, you can build one of the most extraordinary experimental designs of the Second World War on your workbench. What makes this model, in the impressive 1:32 scale, so special is its armament: instead of the usual four machine guns, the barrel of a huge 50 mm cannon protrudes from the nose. Thanks to new components (“New Tools”), you can now precisely recreate this rare version.
Why this kit is a highlight for experts
• Unique silhouette: The U4 variant differs significantly from the standard Me262 due to the distinctive bulge on the nose and the protruding gun barrel.
• New tools: This kit is based on the tried-and-tested Me262 model, but has been expanded to include specially developed parts for the nose section and the cannon.
• Large scale: In 1:32 scale, the aerodynamic lines of the “Schwalbe” design and the technical details really come into their own.
• Challenge Level 5: With 220 individual parts, this model is a challenging project that requires experience in gluing and painting, as well as patience.
• Detailing: Look forward to a finely crafted cockpit, detailed Jumo engines and an authentic undercarriage.
Building the Me262A-1a/U4 is a technical journey of discovery. You’ll see how the engineers sought to integrate a heavy tank gun (the MK 214 A) into a delicate airframe. The precision fit of the new parts ensures that the modified nose fits seamlessly into the fuselage. The finished model is a truly unique addition to any collection of Second World War aircraft and impressively illustrates the belief in the ‘miracle weapon’ of that era.
Background information
The abbreviation “U4” refers to a conversion kit designed to transform the Me262 into a “bomber destroyer”. The aim was to engage Allied bomber formations from a safe distance (beyond the reach of the defensive gunners). To this end, the 50 mm Mauser industrial cannon MK 214 A was mounted in the nose. Only a few prototypes were built and tested. One of them, the “Wilma Jeanne”, fell into the hands of US troops. This model captures precisely this experimental spirit of aviation history.
