The Procat Leka 3.6 kg fibreglass-handled sledgehammer is a long-handled sledgehammer with a steel head weighing 3.6 kg, or 8 lb. The sledgehammer is designed for impact work requiring high kinetic energy in a single blow: breaking up concrete and brick, driving in piles and ground anchors, and dismantling formwork and structures.
The head is a double-ended solid steel head with two flat striking surfaces and ground chamfers at the edges. The chamfers reduce chipping at the edges when the blow is struck at an angle. Using both striking surfaces distributes wear evenly, meaning the head retains its shape for longer than if only one surface were used.
The handle is made of fibreglass. Unlike a wooden handle, a fibreglass handle does not dry out, crack or swell in damp conditions, and it absorbs more of the vibration transmitted back to the hand than a solid steel handle. The upper part of the handle features a black rubber guard below the head: this protects the handle from glancing blows where the workpiece strikes the upper part of the handle, which is the most common point of damage on a mallet.
The lower end of the handle is covered with a ribbed rubber grip, which extends for about a third of the handle’s length and ensures a secure grip even with wet hands. There is a hanging loop at the end of the handle. The long handle allows for a two-handed swing, resulting in a significantly higher swing speed and, consequently, greater impact energy than a short-handled mallet of the same head mass.
