- The winch’s maximum capacity must be significantly greater than the resistance generated by the average loads being pulled by the winch. Correctly sized loads extend the winch’s service life and allow for a momentary increase in load, for example, if a log hits an obstacle.
- Whenever possible, use a skid plate or similar aid to reduce friction and the risk of snagging.
- The breaking strength of the steel wire rope or rope used for hauling should be at least twice the maximum capacity of the winch being used.
- The breaking strength of the pulley used as an aid should be at least 2.5 times greater than the maximum capacity of the winch being used.
- The breaking strength of the lashing strap attached to the pulley or winch should be at least 3.5 times greater than the maximum capacity of the winch being used.
- The diameter of the sheave, measured from the bottom of the groove, determines the maximum diameter of the steel wire rope or rope to be used. The diameter of the steel wire rope or rope must not exceed 10 per cent of the pulley’s diameter.
