The Lactobacillus acidophilus D2/CSL probiotic contained in the PetGuide® product is a natural inhabitant of a healthy gut in both dogs and cats.
Lactobacillus species are lactic acid bacteria found naturally in plants, for example. From there, they travel to the gut, and those strains that can withstand the conditions of the digestive tract end up colonising the gut. Lactobacilli colonise the intestines of cats and dogs immediately after birth, thereby preventing the proliferation of undesirable bacteria such as enterobacteria, Clostridium perfringens and Escherichia coli. If the normal proportion of lactobacilli decreases, the opportunities for undesirable bacteria to thrive increase.
Studies show that Lactobacillus acidophilus D2/CSL CECT 4529 is capable of colonising the gut of cats, dogs and chickens, restoring gut microbial function and the animal’s wellbeing. The EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) has approved this safe and well-researched lactic acid bacteria strain as the only lactobacillus strain for balancing the gut microbiota of dogs and cats.
The gut microbiota performs important functionsThe important functions of the gut microbiota are:
1. preventing attacks by pathogenic bacteria,
2. influencing the utilisation and absorption of nutrients, and
3. supporting the functioning of the immune system via the gut.
The composition and function of the microbiota can be disrupted for many reasons, such as the animal’s ageing, changes in diet, stress, unwanted bacteria and medication.
A severe imbalance in the gut microbiota, known as dysbiosis, may affect the animal’s health, causing acute and chronic intestinal inflammation.

People have been using lactic acid bacteria for a long timeProbiotic lactic acid bacteria, most commonly lactobacilli, have long been used by humans to maintain gut health.
As with humans, the microbiota in animals can also be steered towards a balanced state and the proportion of beneficial bacteria increased. In treatments, different bacterial strains have been found to work in different ways, which is why strain selection is important. Microbes can be transferred between the owner and the pet, so probiotic strains must be safe for both.
As many dogs and cats are lactose intolerant, the AIKA Petguide Symbiotic lactic acid bacteria supplement
does NOT contain lactose. The product also contains no phosphorus, so it can be safely used by cats and dogs with kidney disease.
