AIS (Automatic Identification System) is a maritime system for tracking ships. The system is based on electronic radio messages exchanged between ships, which can be used to identify ships and transmit their progress information to other ships. Data is transmitted at a higher frequency than normal marine VHF radio traffic, requiring a separate AIS antenna for maximum performance.
