The milk thistle (Silybum marianum) from the Mediterranean region is a beautiful plant with purple flowers. It belongs to the Asteraceae family. Previously, the Latin name of milk thistle was Carduus marianus.
The ripe seeds of milk thistle contain its active ingredients, several compounds belonging to the group of flavonolignans, collectively known as silymarin. Among them, the most is silybin or silibinin (48 mg/tablet), and it is also the most significant in its effects.
Milk thistle has been known for over 2000 years for its effect on the liver. In the Middle Ages, it was used to increase milk secretion, which is where the plant's English name milk thistle originated.
However, the effects of milk thistle are mainly associated with the liver. Milk thistle is recommended to protect the liver and to support and enhance liver function. Silymarin, the active ingredient in milk thistle seeds, protects the liver in many ways, e.g. from the harms of alcohol, drugs and other harmful chemicals. Silymarin increases the amount of our body's most important antioxidant, glutathione, and stabilizes liver cell membranes.
Silymarin invigorates the metabolism of liver cells and also affects insulin resistance by improving the insulin sensitivity of liver cells. Poor appetite and fatigue may be caused by the liver. In this case, milk thistle treatments can be helpful.
One Liverin® tablet contains 200 mg of milk thistle seed extract, of which 160 mg is silymarin. 200 mg of extract is equivalent to 5000 mg of dry milk thistle seeds. The tablets are recommended to be taken in 2-month courses.
