This year’s spring greeting cards feature flowers illustrated by Anna Emilia Laitinen, arranged in compositions that include bird shapes.
“I started by sketching the images with a loose hand and a thick black felt-tip pen. Sketching the flowers and birds with a pen involves a continuous flow of long lines, a bit like calligraphy. Once I’d found the right sketches, this calligraphic process continued with brushstrokes in watercolours. The final execution was done using a scanner and a computer,” Laitinen explains.
According to Laitinen, the stamps are flashes of colour from spring.
“They capture that moment at the start of summer when everything in nature happens all at once, and you just wish summer would stop right there. They capture the first flick of a wagtail’s tail or the song of a chaffinch. They carry the scent of birch and willow and the first warm summer breeze. I hope that the stamps convey the mystery of summer, which can be preserved forever in the letter or card you send.”
‘Flowers of Happiness’ is a sheet of 10 stamps featuring 5 different domestic permanent-value stamps.
