PostEurop, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, is an association of European postal operators that currently comprises 53 postal administrations. Every year, the PostEurop member countries issue EUROPA stamps on various themes. To mark this anniversary year, a design competition was organised to select a single EUROPA stamp for the whole of Europe on the theme ‘United in’. All PostEurop postal administrations took part in the vote, and the winning stamp, designed by Klaus Welp, went to Finland. The winning EUROPA stamps feature abstract and symbolic elements.
“Straight lines connect seven dots, symbolising seven decades of joint effort between postal operators across Europe. The background reflects a cheerful mix of colours from the flags of Europe and symbolises the unity of the member states,” explains Tommi Kantola, Design Manager at Posti.
“Amidst today’s turmoil, the need for peace, unity and a strong sense of community is growing in Europe. A well-functioning postal service is one of the cornerstones of democracy, playing its part in providing security for citizens. It’s fantastic that the winning stamp will be printed and issued with each country’s own postmark across Europe,” says Klaus Welp.
The ‘Europa United In’ domestic permanent stamp will be issued in sheets of 10 stamps.
