• Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is present in the bloodstream in several different forms. About 90% of homocysteine is bound to protein. It is formed through enzyme activities, e.g. amino acid from methionine and disappears from the body along the same enzyme pathways.
• Disorders in enzyme activity (hereditary) or vitamin (folic acid, vitamin B6 and B12) deficiencies lead to elevated homocysteine levels in the body.
• Folic acid together with vitamins B6 and B12 promote normal homocysteine metabolism.
• Elevated homocysteine level causes excessive oxidation of LDL cholesterol, changes coagulation factors and increases platelet aggregation (=clumping).
• Men over the age of 30 and women who have passed menopause are the ones who suffer from elevated homocysteine levels (> 9 mmol/l).
• Homocysteine levels can be lowered by ensuring adequate intake of folic acid, vitamin B6 and B12 in nutrition.
