The Marius®© pattern was originally designed by the Norwegian Unn Søiland in 1953. The pattern is named after the Norwegian war hero, alpine skier and actor, Marius Eriksen. The pattern was first seen on Marius Eriksen, wearing a hand-knitted jumper, on the cover of a craft magazine. The pattern became hugely popular, the most widely used design in Norway, and is still known as the Marius pattern. The pattern represents the sporty outdoor lifestyle and traditions typical of Norwegians. Today, the pattern is a Norwegian icon.
