Which Electric Car Is Right for a Child?
Electric cars are sold with a smaller 6-volt battery and with slightly larger 12- or 24-volt batteries. Before you drop the most powerful car into your shopping cart, it’s worth thinking about what kind of child the car is for. A powerful car goes faster – is it really the most sensible choice for a tiny toddler? A simple rule of thumb: less power for smaller kids, more for bigger ones.
A 6-volt car is a great fit for children under 5. It’s best on flat surfaces, like indoors, but it can be difficult to drive on grass, for example. The speed is about the same as a calm walking pace.
12-volt cars are faster and are an excellent choice for children over 5. They handle grass, gravel, and asphalt. With a 12-volt electric car, the speed is around a light jogging pace. This size is great for cruising around yards.
24-volt cars clearly have more power. These electric cars are suitable for kids around 5–10 years old. At this level the speed starts to feel more like a bicycle – they can reach up to 15 km/h.
